A story about stem cells, told through 2D animation.
It all started when I was talking with J.L. Mazuelas (president of Vidaplus) about creating a video story that would explain stem cells, their collection, the preservation process, and their benefits. Then an idea occurred to me, which I shared with him: Why not tell the story from the perspective of the newborn baby from whom the umbilical cord stem cells are extracted? He thought the idea was perfect, and we got to work. My first step was to conduct the interviews that would help gather all the information needed to write the script.
Once the script was finished and approved, I started sketching out the characters. At the same time, I called Idamor Fernández, a very talented young man I’d always had in mind, because I knew he’d be the perfect voice for this project. He was very receptive to the idea and agreed to do it. So one day I went over to his house with my portable audio recorder. Once inside his room, we set up an impromptu recording studio and began the voice recording. That’s when the magic happened! Idamor read a section of the script, and on the second take, he recorded the whole thing in one go all the way to the end. It was so fast and perfect that even his own parents amazed exclaimed, “Are you done already?!”
I then began the animation work, using the voiceover as a guide. Next, I added background music and sound effects to wrap up the project. Here is the final video, which we all enjoyed immensely.
